Our overall goal is to create inclusive and resilient dwelling clusters for urban resettlement in Addis Ababa, developing a transdisciplinary approach of analysis, planning and design integrated with a Living Lab model. To achieve this, the project is subdivided in four objectives:
1. Survey and map the social and spatial practices (patterns of inhabitation) of dwellers in three urban conditions: a) a traditional “sefer” (neighbourhood) of Addis Ababa, b) a slum rehabilitation settlement and c) an urban resettlement site.
2. Analyse the various processes involved in the development of urban resettlement projects, and assess the conditions for using interdisciplinary processes of planning, implementation and management with these processes.
3. Planning and design experimentation involving community participation, including experiments aimed at technological advancements in material and construction techniques.
4. Develop integrated actionable frameworks and a policy paper aimed at the mitigation of effects of Development Induces Displacement and Resettlement (DIDR) by the use of a transdisciplinary approach to housing planning, design, implementation and management.
Improving design and construction of affordable housing through an integrated participatory approach affects the lives of many (future) inhabitants of the city of Addis Ababa.
A better understanding of the current dwelling communities helps to protect the livelihoods, self-reliance, dignity and the overall quality of life of inhabitants.
This project will contribute to (1) providing adequate, safe, healthy and affordable housing; (2) improving the skills and capacity of local planners, developers and contractors for co-creation; (3) increasing the knowledge for implementing integrated policies and housing programmes towards resource efficiency, technical optimization, use of local materials in combination with good maintenance.
